Electro-Magnetic Pollution
The most pervasive and damaging pollutants in most people’s homes now are the electromagnetic pollution given off constantly by cordless phones and wireless broadband. Many people who live in densely populated areas are being affected by their neighbours’ systems too.
This type of radiation has never been proven to be safe. There are hundreds of studies showing the biological effects of mobile phone type radiation on humans and animals, but these are being ignored for commercial reasons.
See www.bioinititiative.org for a detailed report prepared by top scientists.
Research Findings
Radiation from mobile phone masts and mobile phones has been linked with a wide number of physical conditions such as:
- Recurrent headaches
- Concentration difficulties
- Learning and memory problems
- Chronic fatigue
- Sleep problems
- Depression
- Dizziness
- Behavioural problems
- Migraine
- Nausea
- Sperm quality
- Reduced melatonin production
Research from Sweden has found that people who start using mobile phones before the age of 20 are five times more likely to develop certain tumours as children’s skulls are thinner and their brains are still developing.
The Interphone Report concluded that people who use their mobile phones for at least 30 minutes per day for 10 years may have a greater risk of developing brain cancer. This is quite a modest exposure compared to how long many people talk on their mobile these days.
As cancer can take 20 – 30 years to show up after exposure to the carcinogen, it is too late to wait until we have conclusive evidence.
I therefore recommend that families adopt a precautionary approach and follow the guidelines below to limit their exposure to all forms of electromagnetic radiation.
Mobile Phone Use
- Hold phone away from your body when switching it on and immediately after dialling until the person answers. The signal power is at full strength when connecting the call.
- Only allow children to use mobiles for short, essential calls.
- Keep all calls short (less than 2 minutes) unless using a speakerphone.
- If you have to use a mobile for long calls for business purposes the safest option is to use a air tube.
- When sending or receiving a text message, hold the phone away from your body.
- Switch your phone off between calls, if possible. Remember to check in for messages.
- Turn mobiles off at night. Buy an battery clock with an alarm if need be.
- Switch your iphone to ‘flight’ mode at night to prevent your phone being used like a mini base station to pass on other people’s calls. This is the only way to stop your iphone emitting radiation.
- Always hold the phone between yourself and the signal source – such as between you and the nearest window.
- Put your phone on standby in a bag, or somewhere close to you, but not next to your body or near to children.
- Avoid keeping a mobile on in a bag on the handle bars of a pushchair. Children and babies are more susceptible to the effects of radiation.
- Switch your iphone to ‘airplane ‘ mode at night to prevent your phone being used like a mini base station to pass on other people’s calls. This is the only way to stop your iphone emitting radiation.
- Avoid placing a mobile that is switched on in a pocket next to your body unless you use a Blocsock or other shielding device. See www.blocsock.com. Quote BRHH2011 to obtain a discount.
