Why Laptops Aren’t Really Laptops At All!
Nov 18th
I’ve been recommending to clients for a long time that using a laptop on your lap isn’t a good idea as they produce significant levels of radio-frequency electric fields and high frequency fields for driving the back-illumination. Sitting in these fields for long periods of time is hardly going to enhance your health, even if you’re unaware of the effects.
Now in addition to this, recent research reported in November’s Fertility and Sterility Journal (1) has shown that men sitting with a laptop on their lap produced a 1⁰ C increase in the temperature of their testes within 11 minutes. The use of a lap pad resulted in the 1⁰ C temperature rise occurring after 14 minutes. The same temperature increase was only delayed by 3 minutes – so this does not prove to be an effective strategy.
The testes are meant to be kept at a temperature 1 or 2 degrees below that of the body. A 1⁰ C rise is sufficient to reduce sperm production in the short term. After one hour’s laptop use the temperature can rise by up to 2.5⁰ C. Given the number of couples who are experiencing difficulties conceiving a baby, this information needs to be made widely known.
My advice for anyone, man, woman or child, using a ‘laptop’ is to use it on a table top!
