Decisions – How They Can Make You Stressed and What To Do About It

Making decisions takes brain power. An endless stream of decisions, no
matter how small can leave you feeling stressed and depleted. This is why your willpower may be weaker in the evening and you give in to chocolate or another glass of wine or whatever your weakness is, despite your good intentions.
Agonizing Over Decisions
However, some people find making decisions extremely difficult and draining and can leave them feeling anxious about the consequences. They may find it hard to say ‘No’ to requests without feeling guilty, or worry about missed opportunities or what other people will think of them. As a result they may put off decisions for as long as possible or fret over ones they have already made.
If as a child you were
- not allowed to make any decisions of your own
- you were criticised for the choices you made
- made to feel a failure when you made a mistake
- blamed for unfortunate consequences
this can make you doubt your own instincts and decision-making ability as an adult.
Being unable to feel relaxed about decisions you have made or are trying to make can overtax your nervous system, disrupt sleep patterns, reduce the quality of sleep and lead to a sense of overwhelm and self doubt. So if you or your child or family member always answers a question with ‘I don’t know’ or ‘I don’t mind’, it may be because they have an underlying fear of ‘getting it wrong’ or being judged.

Top Tips for Easier Decision Making
- Plan regular times for activities such as exercise or meditation so you avoid having to make decisions about when to fit those things into your day. if you lack motivation, schedule your visits to the gym or plan regular power walks with a friend.
- Plan ahead as many things as you can to avoid constant decisions.
- Make important decisions when you are feeling fresh. ‘Sleep on it’ is a better alternative to a rushed decision made when you’re feeling tired.
- Conserve your energy resources by using it carefully so you have some in reserve for emergencies and crises.
- Eat protein, such as eggs, lean meat, fish, sea food, cottage cheese, tofu and pulses, at each meal to prevent blood sugar crashes and loss of energy and willpower. Avoid skipping meals.
- Drink plenty of filtered water right through the day to avoid creating stress to your body by dehydration. Your brain needs water to function well.
- If you are putting off making a decision, focus on the sensation that is being created by your thoughts and feelings around this issue. Take your awareness to the area of your body that is affected and breathe deeply to let go of any stuck emotions. Stay focussed on the matter and see if you can identify the feelings associated with it. By staying with the issue and the bodily sensations that it brings up, it is likely that the uncomfortable feelings will just gently dissipate.

How You Can Help Create A More Loving World

The rioting that took place a short while ago in the UK seemed to create a form of collective madness that drew some people in to do things that they would not usually contemplate. It is very easy to condemn everyone who took part and think that our society is breaking down. However, our society as a whole can be used as a metaphor for our own selves. We can’t just cut off or ignore the annoying or destructive parts without damaging our whole selves, much like just sending the looters and rioters to prison and giving them no further thought.
The only way we can heal ourselves is to shine the light on the parts that we keep in the shadows – the aspects of ourselves we probably do not like to admit we possess – such as fear, greed, anger, hate, resentment, our sense of inadequacy etc. Instead of condemning those aspects, we can show compassion to ourselves and keep blessing ourselves just as we are. It is our negative thoughts and feelings, both conscious and unconscious that create our physical, mental and emotional pain. Taking your awareness to an uncomfortable emotion and exploring what it is and how it feels, rather than distracting yourself from it, can be very helpful in letting it go.
In our communities and the wider society we can silently bless everyone we meet instead of judging, criticising or condemning them. This has the effect of creating loving vibrations – which are healing ones – to the people around us and to ourselves. I know people who have found this discipline to be the most life enhancing thing they have ever done. 
If you practise meditation you might like to imagine sending love and forgiveness to the whole world, by creating an image of the earth in front of you and projecting loving feelings from your heart towards it.
I am heartened and inspired by the reports of communities coming together to repair the destruction from the riots. Good does come out of these situations – we just have to look for it.

Dangers of Mobiles and Wi-fi Admitted – How Can We Help Protect Children?

I’m so delighted that the political mainstream is finally waking up to the dangers of wireless technology and publicly admitting it. However, it’s much harder to ensure that things change as a result of this so that the unborn, children and the vulnerable are protected from the excesses of mobile phones and wireless technology.
We can make a difference in our local communities by talking about this to our neighbours, friends, family, colleagues and local schools and sharing factual information. I hope that this newsletter will give you the motivation and resources to do just that. It would be great to hear how you get on.
EU Governments Advised to Reduce Exposure to Wireless Radiation
In the last fortnight (27.5.11) the Council of Europe has acknowledged the
dangers of wi-fi , cordless and mobile phones and recommends that EU governments “take all reasonable measures” to reduce exposure to electromagnetic fields and all sources of wireless radiation “and particularly the exposure to children and young people who seem to be most at risk from head tumours”.
It also recommends that governments should:
- “for children in general, and particularly in schools and classrooms, give preference to wired Internet connections, and strictly regulate the use of mobile phones by schoolchildren on school premises”,
- put in place information and awareness-raising campaigns on the risks of potentially harmful long-term biological effects on the environment and on human health, especially “targeting children, teenagers and young people of reproductive age”.
At the same time, the World Health Organisation has put mobile phones on the list of possible carcinogens, in the same category as lead, dry cleaning and exhaust fumes.
Brain Tumours in Childhood
Brain tumours in children are the commonest solid tumour of childhood in England. There are around 5 cases per 100,000 in children aged 0-9 years (Cancer Research UK Oct 2005). Children are more at risk of being damaged by pulsed radiation from mobile and cordless phones, microwave ovens and wi-fi because of their thinner skulls and developing brains. As radiation of this kind has only recently become so prevalent, especially in the last ten years, it might be expected that the incidence of this type of cancer will increase in children. Many schools, including junior schools, have now introduced wi-fi in the classrooms so exposing young children who are more at risk than adults.
Effects of Mobile Phones
Research studies have shown a link between mobile phone use and behaviour issues in children, increases in cognitive mistakes, changes in brain development and sleep disturbances amongst many other effects. Keeping a mobile in a trouser pocket has been shown to reduce both sperm count and sperm quality in males. It’s likely to cause cancer too.
It’s much easier and cheaper for men to turn their mobiles off rather than subject their partners to IVF treatment, if they have fertility issues. So share this knowledge with the males you know.
Resources to Stimulate Change
My concern is that the UK government will not require schools to reduce the exposure of children to wi-fi and mobile phone radiation at school, especially since many schools have only recently introduced wireless systems instead of wired ones. The mobile phone industry generates billions of pounds of revenue for the government and is likely to lobby hard against any moves to educate people about the risks of mobile phones, for fear that this will reduce their sales.
In my view, some of the children who are most sensitive to the effects of pulsed radiation from mobile phones and wi-fi are likely to be the ones who have learning and behavioural difficulties, since their nervous systems are not functioning well already. Research has found that epileptic seizures can be triggered by wireless radiation in susceptible individuals.

Silent Radiation in the Classroom
In secondary schools do we know how many children are keeping their phones on in their pockets while on ‘silent’? Equally, are teachers in junior schools keeping their phones on while near young children?
I have seen teenagers in my clinic who are so sensitive that they can hear high-pitched noises when in the classroom from all the mobiles left on. This can make it very difficult for them to concentrate and can induce headaches, brain fog and fatigue. When they go outside they feel so much better. However, most students and teachers will be affected without realising as they attribute their restlessness, headache, difficulty focussing or memory problems to stress or learning difficulties or whatever. It is estimated that 1.5 – 9% of the population are electro-sensitive. Many of these people affected will not attribute their symptoms to this cause, especially as doctors appear to be unaware of the potential effects of this technology.
How revealing it would be to see what happens to behaviour in the classroom, ability to concentrate and exam and test results when mobiles and wi-fi are turned off!
Mobile Phones Switched On In The Classroom
It is easy to check when mobile phones have been left on by using an Acoustimeter which gives an audible signal when picking up pulsed radiation from mobile phones, phone masts, cordless phones, baby monitors etc. These can be hired on a weekly basis or bought from http://www.emfields.org/equipment/acoustimeter.asp
Children need protection from this all-pervasive technology as they are most prone to being damaged by it and do not have control of their environment. It is therefore the responsibility of informed adults to take action to protect the future generations.
As one of the increasing number of people who suffers from electro-sensitivity I know that pulsed radiation has wide-ranging effects on the human body. We now have prominent organisations advising that we err on the side of caution and reduce exposure rather than letting the convenience of mobiles and wi-fi take precendence over children’s health. Let’s not wait any longer to make our concerns known about the need to protect the vulnerable – that includes the elderly too.

Sugar – Are You Getting All Its Nutrients?

We all know that white sugar isn’t very good for us, however no one seems to pass on the secret that sugar needn’t leach minerals from our bodies, if it’s the right kind. Sugar cane cutters who drink the raw cane juice tend not to have dental decay, as nature provides all the nutrients needed to digest sugar in the cane.
When I read this I started to do muscle testing to see if it is just white sugar that is weakening to our bodies. To my surprise every one that I’ve tested so far weakens to white sugar but doesn’t weaken to unrefined brown sugar. This is because the unrefined type contains the minerals and vitamins found in the sugar cane juice, which are needed to digest this appealing substance. It has a significant content of phosphorus, calcium. magnesium, potassium and iron.
By contrast, in order to metabolise white sugar your body’s reserves of minerals and vitamins will be raided as the refined sugar is merely ‘empty calories’. With excessive eating of sugar this can lead to a situation of malnutrition and obesity, which is becoming ever more prevalent. As the body becomes increasingly deficient in important nutrients all kinds of physical, mental and emotional problems will start to appear. Bone thinning and weakness in ligaments and tendons can result and are even affecting children due to the high amount of hidden sugar in processed food and drinks.
Small amounts of unrefined brown sugar are unlikely to be detrimental to your health. But you need to know what to buy – brown sugar is not the same as Muscovado or natural brown sugar.
Brown Sugar v. Unrefined/Raw/Natural Brown Sugar
Brown sugar is refined white sugar covered with molasses to make it look brown. This is very different from unrefined or natural brown sugar (usually known as Muscovado or Demerara) which is not chemically treated, can only be made from sugar cane and not beet and retains the natural nutrients found in sugarcane juice. Brown sugar is likely to contain traces of chemicals used in the processing, such as sulphur dioxide, phosphoric acid and bleaching agents and have far less minerals and vitamins than the unrefined version. An added bonus is that unrefined sugar is often processed in the country where the sugar cane grows and is therefore of greater value to the local economy.
Shop Bought Goods and Unrefined Sugar
If you don’t have time to always bake your own cakes or biscuits, it is likely that reputable companies involved in using wholefoods will use unrefined sugar, usually granulated or caster. These sugars don’t have so many nutrients as Muscovado or Demerara as they have less molasses in them, but they are superior to white sugar. Doves Farm uses unrefined granulated sugar in their products. There are some nutritious cereal bars,such as 9 Bar and The Food Doctor, amongst the many that are packed full of refined sugars, eg Kellogs. You will most likely find the more nutritious ones in your local health food shop but you still need to read the ingredients list or contact the manufacturer.
Enhancing Children’s Nutritional Status
It is vital that we teach our children about the damaging effects of white sugar and encourage schools who still teach cookery to use unrefined sugar.
I always use Muscovado sugar when baking cakes or puddings – it makes them taste delicious. I find that the flavour of unrefined sugar means that I don’t need to add so much as recipes specify.
If cooking with muscovado sugar is the norm in your house, it’s likely that your children will continue with the habit. Of course, sugar, even the unrefined kind, needs to be used in moderation to prevent blood sugar swings and weight gain. Any sugar that is not burnt up in activity will be stored as fat.
Fizzy drinks contain enormous quantities of white sugar and ‘diet’ varieties use artificial sweeteners, such as aspartame and more recently, neotame. There is a worrying amount of research showing how damaging these chemical sweeteners are. Virtually every independent analysis of aspartame not conducted by partners of the manufacturer (Monsanto)has revealed a long list of disturbing side effects, mostly neurological in nature.
Encouraging children to drink water rather than milk, juice or fizzy drinks is one of the most important health strategies for life, and one of the most effective ways of preventing weight gain.
So I’ve been remotivated to make an extra effort to bake more rather than buying ready made cakes etc. Doubling or trebling the recipe and freezing the excess can make it less time consuming and it’s an activity that children can take part in or do by themselves when older.

Is the new vaccination schedule for babies safe?

The Government announced at the end of 2010 that toddlers are to be given six vaccines in three injections all at once between 12 and 13 months of age. According to Dr Richard Halvorsen (a former GP) this ‘confirms my fear that expediency is more important to policymakers than safety.’ Under this new schedule the MMR vaccine will be given alongside the pneumoccal and
Hib-Men C boosters. It’s likely that the Government is hoping that vaccine take up will increase with fewer visits to the doctor’s being required.
When forty children are suspected to have died as a result of receiving routine vaccinations in the past seven years and more than 1500 neurological reactions, (data from the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Authority), what is the likely consequence of increasing the vaccine load so heavily for babies at around one year old?
The amount of aluminium in the vaccines given to babies currently on vaccination days is between 44 and 71 times the US minimal risk level and up to 150 times the World Health Organisation advised maximum level for oral intake (Dr Halvorsen’s figures). This is just one among many different toxins within the vaccines. This metal is toxic to the brain and the bones and it’s now common knowledge that aluminium is linked to the development of dementia. How will babies react to this assault on their young systems?
Courts are now awarding compensation for brain damage from the MMR vaccine, such as Hannah Poling in the US who suffered autistic regression at 19 months. However, they still won’t admit to a link between MMR and autism, which is only a particular form of brain damage.
As there is no long-term reseach on giving all these vaccines all at once, we just don’t know what the effects will be. However, common sense would tell you that giving so many toxins in one go to an immature immune system is likely to cause more damage rather than less than is currently occurring.

Want protection whilst using or carrying a mobile phone?

However, do remember these simple rules to lower your exposure and reduce the health risks from mobile phones.
1. Whenever possible, text instead of calling.
2. Switch off or shield your phone by placing it in your blocsock when carrying it.
3. Switch off your mobile at night and put iphones in airplane mode.
4. When in the car turn all mobile phones off to protect all the occupants. The radiation is magnified inside the metal of the car about 100 times.
5. If you must make substantial calls do it in your blocsock.
6. Prohibit your child’s phone use wherever possible. When this is not possible, make sure that they use the blocsock.

What Detoxing Really Means

At this time of year, after the excesses of Christmas, there are countless articles about ways of detoxing. It may be possible to release toxins from where they’ve been stored in your body by eating more healthily, but unless these are eliminated from your body you may end up feeling worse in the short term. For long term health and vitality being able to excrete toxins effectively is vital. So what does that mean in practice?
Elimination
Most elimination occurs through the bowels and via the bladder from the kidneys. In our modern way of living constipation is a very common feature. However, what many natural health practitioners call constipation isn’t the same as the general public’s idea. For improving your health I consider a minimum of two bowel movements per day to be essential. (Think of how often we eat!)
Many people don’t achieve this because they
- drink very little plain water
- are deficient in magnesium or other minerals
- are short of fibre in their diet, especially vegetables, wholegrains and fruit
- lack beneficial gut flora (usually as a result of taking antibiotics)
- are affected by electro-smog inducing dehydration and lack of gut movement
- hold onto negative emotions
Constipation becomes a vicious circle as increasing levels of toxins affect your brain chemistry and lowers your mood, so you feel less inclined to take positive action.
Learning from Nature
Animals do not hang onto negative emotions. For example, after a confrontation between two ducks, each one will swim away and flap their wings vigorously a few times to get rid of the excess energy created by their stress and then swim on tranquilly.
If you tend to go over painful incidents from the past in your mind and find it hard to let go of grudges, this means you are holding onto mental, emotional and physical toxicity.
Techniques to Release Negative Emotions
- Breathing out deeply a few times when feeling stressed or after an emotional upset so that you can let go and move on.
- Learn to focus on the present. Yoga, t’ai chi, walking in nature, meditation and deep breathing are all helpful practices, especially when done regularly.
- Listen to subliminal learning CDs to cancel out negative thought patterns and replace them with positive ones. I especially like the series made by Liz Adamson and find them very effective. Click here for details.

Are you S.A.D. at this time of year?

Does your energy and mood drop once the clocks go back and it becomes dark so much earlier? Would you like to hibernate all day?
Many people find light boxes helpful for SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder). One source is www.healthy-house.co.uk. However, they will only be palliative in that they treat the symptom not the underlying cause. This means that people have to keep using them to feel ok during the winter months.
If your antecedents came from the northern latitudes, such as the UK, they would have evolved being able to cope with long dark winters. I’m finding that suppressed or unresolved emotions especially to do with grief can be at the root of this problem. Also, high levels of toxicity stored in your body are likely to affect the balance of neurotransmitters that control your mood. How to Treat Your Child’s Coughs and Colds Naturally

Recent studies have shown that many over-the-counter cough and cold medicines have been found to be harmful to children and therefore banned from being sold without a prescription. Now the cold weather has arrived is a good time to remind you about the natural alternatives that will enhance your children’s health and not damage it.
- Offer tepid filtered water (not chilled) every half hour or so to replace moisture lost through nose blowing and coughing. For children with sore throats, using a straw can make swallowing less painful.
- Many families use New Era tissue salts (get them from health food stores and large chemists) to reduce unpleasant cough and cold symptoms . Coughs and colds become an outlet for discharges when your child’s body has become overloaded with toxicity.
- New Era combination J tissue salts for ‘Coughs, Colds and Chestiness’ can be given to babies and children and they dissolve very quickly on the their tongue. Where the baby is breastfed it may be preferable for the mother to take the tissue salts. Older children can be given one or two tablets twice or three times daily while cold or cough symptoms last.
- Steam inhalation with hot water is excellent for clearing the nose and sinuses, especially before bed for older children and with adult supervision. Younger children can be put in a steamy bathroom for a while. If they have a bath, make sure they do not get chilled afterwards.
- Reduce your child’s exposure to electro-smog by turning off mobile phones (especially important in the car) and wi-fi which cause dehydration in their cells and stimulate allergic reactions. This is particularly important for children prone to wheeziness or asthma.
- Use the appropriate homeopathic remedy to reduce the unpleasant symptoms and make your child feel better. Staff at health food shops are usually very knowledgeable about homeopathic remedies or else call one of the homeopathic pharmacies who will post you the remedy.
- Offer nutritious foods like chicken broth, vegetable soups, raw vegetables, humous, nut butter and seeds. Avoid sweet and sugary foods which suppress the immune system. Steering clear of milk and reducing wheat consumption can reduce mucous production and speed up recovery time.
- As winter draws on ensure your child gets enough sleep and wraps up warmly when going out. Many children prone to coughs will develop them from their chests getting chilled when out in a cold wind.
- If your child is prone to constant coughs and colds, take them to a homeopath or naturopath, preferably before they become unwell, for treatment to increase their resilience.
